INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING AND INSTALLING STARTUP/WAIT/SHUTDOWN SCREENS (The ZIP and EXE files on this site are already prepared and need no further preparation. The single logo screens [JPG], however, need to be prepared before installation) Basically, there are 3 steps to preparing the logo screens - RESIZE, CONVERT (color depth), & SAVE. Those not using a logo screen or theme installer must perform an extra step - CHANGE (the file extensions). How you actually perform these operations depends largely on the brand of photo editor you are using. The instrucions are pretty much generic, so the photo editor you are actually using may use a little different procedure, but you should perform the operations in the chronological order given below. 1. OPEN the new screen in your photo editor. 2. RESIZE the new screen 320 pixels (width) by 400 pixels (height). a. Click on the "EDIT" or "TRANSFORM" menu of the photo editor. b. Select the image size change feature. c. Uncheck the "KEEP ASPECT RATIO" box on the pop-up menu. d. Change the width to 320 pixels. e. Change the height to 400 pixels. (NOTE: The image will appear squashed, but Windows stretches it to fit your desktop). 3. CONVERT the color format of the resized image to 8-bit index, 256 color. a. Click on the "CONVERT" menu. b. Select 8-bit index 256 color. 4. SAVE the resized, 256 color-indexed image as a bitmap (.bmp). a. Click on the "FILE" menu in the photo editor. b. Select "SAVE AS". c. Check to ensure that the "SAVE FILE AS TYPE" window at the bottom of the pop-up indicates that the image is being saved as .bmp; if it does not, change it to .bmp. d. MANUAL INSTALLATION: (If you are NOT using a theme installer or logo screen installation program) 1. Save the startup screen in C:\ as logo.bmp. 2. Save the wait screen in C:\Windows as logow.bmp. 3. Save the shutdown screen in C:\Windows as logos.bmp. 4. Go to Step 5 MANUAL INSTALLATION e. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION (If you ARE using a theme or logo screen installation program) 1. Save the startup screen as logo.bmp, the wait screen logow.bmp, and the shutdown screen logos.bmp in any folder you wish. 2. Go to Step 5 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION 5. CHANGE THE FILE EXTENSIONS of the old and the new screens using File Manager. a. MANUAL INSTALLATION 1. DEACTIVEATE OLD STARTUP SCREEN: Using File Manager, find logo.sys in C:\ and change the file extension from .sys to .old ACTIVATE NEW STARTUP SCREEN: Find the new startup screen in C:\ you saved as logo.bmp and change its extension from .bmp to .sys 2. DEACTIVATE OLD WAIT AND SHUTDOWN SCREENS: Using File Manager, find logos.sys and logow.sys in C:\Windows, and change their file extensions from .sys to .old ACTIVATE NEW WAIT AND SHUTDOWN SCREENS: Find the new wait and shutdown screens in C:\Windows you saved as logow.bmp and logos.bmp and change their extensions from .bmp to .sys 3. You do not have to do any more. Windows will select and display the new screens according to their file names, extensions, and placement. (NOTE: You can resurrect your old screens by changing their file extensions from .old back to .sys). b. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION 1. (OPTIONAL: Most logo screen/desktop theme installers will install the screens with a .bmp extension). Using File Manager, navigate to the folder where you saved the new screens and change their file extensions from .bmp to .sys. You do not need to change the file extensions of the old screens. 2. Open the theme or logo scree installation program and install the screens according to the program's instructions.
